Cerebrospinal Fluid
#1
Today I decided to do research on cerebrospinal fluid because I came across a post online about a disorder called hydrocephalus. I was intrigued by what causes this disorder and what happens to people who have it. This led me to the discovery of cerebrospinal fluid, the main cause of hydrocephalus, so I decided to dig deeper and learn more about this topic.
What is Cerebrospinal Fluid?
Cerebrospinal fluid, also called CSF, is a fluid that circulates through the ventricles of the brain and around the surface of the brain and spinal cord.
Function
CSF cushions the brain against the skull and cushions parts of the brain and spinal tissues. It also washes out wastes and impurities from the brain.
CSF Production
Because CSF is constantly being absorbed into the blood stream, the body usually secretes and absorbs the same amount of CSF every day in order to maintain a normal amount of CSF. Adults secrete around 400 to 600 mL of CSF per day!
CSF Disorders
Some conditions and disorders related to CSF include hydrocephalus, CSF leak, meningitis, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
