Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
#55
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is a result of someone witnessing or experiencing an extremely traumatic event.
Symptoms
Symptoms of PTSD can include uncontrollable thoughts about the event, flashbacks, nightmares, mood changes, changes in emotional reactions (easily startled, always on guard), and avoiding people, places, activities, objects, and situations that serve as a reminder of the event.
Treatment
Not everyone who has PTSD needs treatment; symptoms may disappear on their own over time or with the support of their family and friends.
Treatment such as talk therapy (psychotherapy) and medication can help others recover.
