Plantar Fasciitis
#30
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that occurs when the plantar fascia, a band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes, becomes inflamed.
Symptoms
Some common symptoms of plantar fasciitis include feeling a sharp, stabbing pain near the heel or bottom of the foot, stiffness, and swelling of the heel. The pain felt in plantar fasciitis usually feels the worst during the first few steps after waking up or after long periods of inactivity (sitting, standing).
Causes
Plantar fasciitis can be caused by many factors, including overuse, weight (usually occurs in overweight individuals), foot structure, types of walking/exercising surfaces (sidewalk, concrete, etc.), and types of shoes worn.
Treatment
Plantar fasciitis can be treated by stretching, icing, using night splints, taking medicine, taking a break from the activity that caused plantar fasciitis, or physical therapy. It usually takes a few weeks to a few months for plantar fasciitis to completely heal.
