Cystinuria
#80
Cystinuria is a rare genetic disorder in which the kidneys don’t reabsorb the amino acid cystine. This leads to a buildup of undissolved cystine in the kidneys and bladder, which can form kidney stones.
Cystinuria affects around 1 in 10,000 people.
Symptoms
sharp pain in the lower back or abdomen
fever
vomiting
bloody urine
Treatment
Treatments for cystinuria include increasing daily water intake, reducing salt and meat intake, and taking medication. These approaches all help reduce the risk of cystine stones forming.
