PCOS
#31
Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal disorder caused by an imbalance of a woman’s reproductive hormones, creating problems with the ovaries (glands that store eggs). This prevents the follicles in the ovaries from maturing and releasing eggs during ovulation, causing the immature follicles to build up along the outer edge of the ovary. This can cause problems with a woman’s menstrual period and may cause infertility.
Many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, causing insulin levels to build up inside the body. This increases the risk of getting diabetes.
The exact cause of PCOS is still unknown.
Symptoms
Symptoms of PCOS include missed, irregular, or light periods, excessive body hair (hirsutism), weight gain, skin tags on the neck or armpits, acne, male-pattern baldness, and darkened skin underneath the breasts, around the neck, or in the armpits.
Treatment
There is currently no cure for PCOS, but certain medications can help with symptoms, regulate periods, help ovulate to become pregnant, and reduce excessive hair growth/acne. Improving diet and increasing physical activity can help the body use insulin more efficiently, lose weight, reduce symptoms, lower blood glucose levels, and ovulate.
