Cirrhosis
#63
Cirrhosis is a condition in which your liver is scarred and permanently damaged. This occurs when the liver tries to repair itself after getting damaged, causing scar tissue to form and replace healthy liver tissue. As more and more scar tissue forms, your liver can begin to fail.
Causes
The most common cause of cirrhosis is hepatitis C. Other common causes include alcohol-related liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, certain genetic diseases, and hepatitis B.
Symptoms
There may be no noticeable symptoms of cirrhosis until the liver is badly damaged. Some symptoms include fatigue, nausea, weight loss, itchy skin, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, spider-like blood vessels, bruising & bleeding easily, and edema.
Treatment
The damage from cirrhosis cannot be undone, but treatments like medications and lifestyle changes (cutting out alcohol consumption, losing weight, etc.) can help slow liver damage.
