Osteomyelitis
#68
Osteomyelitis is a bone infection usually caused by bacteria or fungi that infect the bone marrow through wounds or surgery sites, which then allow the infection to spread through the bloodstream and reach the bone.
In children, osteomyelitis most often affects their leg or arm bones. In adults, osteomyelitis usually affects the vertebrae or hips.
Osteomyelitis can be either acute or chronic (the infection can come back months or years later in bones that are not completely cured after treatment).
