Anorexia
#5
Today’s topic is continuing from last week’s topic: eating disorders. Anorexia, also called anorexia nervosa, is a common eating disorder that affects many teenagers and young adults.
What is Anorexia?
People with anorexia become obsessed with their body weight and the food they eat, and this disorder often affects more women than men. Anorexia can lead to other problems in the body, such as anemia, kidney or heart problems, and even death. Anorexia has the highest mortality rates out of all eating disorders.
Symptoms
Anorexia can be shown through physical as well as emotional symptoms. Some physical symptoms seen in people who have anorexia are extreme weight loss, dehydration, and lanugo. Emotional/behavioral symptoms include mood swings, bingeing & vomiting, and having a distorted perception of the body.
Treatments
Treatments like nutrition counseling, therapy, and hospitalization can help people with anorexia to repair their relationship with food and their body and bring them back to a healthy weight.
