ADHD, also known as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is a very common developmental disorder that affects millions of children and adults every year.
ADHD is usually diagnosed during childhood, and often lasts throughout adulthood as well.
No specific cause has been identified for ADHD yet.
Types of ADHD and their Symptoms
There are a variety of symptoms in people with ADHD, but some common ones are listed below. Symptoms vary depending on the type of ADHD a person has, and they can also change over time.
Inattentive type:
doesn’t pay attention to details/makes careless mistakes
problems with staying focused
easily distracted
has problems with organization/time management
Hyperactive/impulsive type:
fidgets a lot
has a hard time staying seated for long periods of time
interrupts, blurts, or talks a lot
difficulty waiting
Combined type:
has symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive types
Treatment
Treatment for ADHD includes medications like stimulants and therapy (behavior therapy).
