Retinal Tear
#13
As the title suggests, a retinal tear occurs when there is a tear or hole in the retina. The retina is a layer of cells that lines the eye and allows you to see things. A retinal tear can cause problems with the eyes, such as blurry vision, and if left untreated, can lead to a detached retina.
Causes
Vitreous, which is a gel-like substance in the eye, is usually attached to the retina. But as you get older, it starts shrinking, moving around, and separating itself from the retina. This is called a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), and usually happens without any problems. But if the vitreous sticks to the retina, it can pull hard enough to cause a retinal tear.
Eye trauma, such as injuries or surgeries, can also cause a retinal tear.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a torn retina include seeing flashes of light, black spots, floaters, and darkened or blurry vision.
Treatment
It is important to note that not all retinal tears require treatment. Some tears do not affect the person’s vision at all, and some tears are able to heal without treatment. If necessary, treatments include laser surgery and cryopexy (freeze treatment).
