Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
#11
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death, is the sudden death of a baby that is under one year old. The baby often dies in their sleep, and there is no known cause of SIDS.
Risk Factors
Factors that may raise the risk of a baby having SIDS include the mother being under 20 years old, smoking, consuming alcohol or drugs, or not receiving proper medical care when pregnant. Some risk factors in babies include age (higher risk during the first 2-4 months of life), family history, premature birth, or low birth weight.
Sleep Factors
A baby’s position while sleeping may also affect the risk of SIDS. Sleeping on the side or stomach, on a soft surface, or on a bed shared with other people/pets can increase the risk of the baby dying from SIDS.
